Look for the Value

I have been in this business for 30-plus years. During that time, I’ve been continually amazed at people who want to know “what is your hourly rate?” or “what is the cost?” Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting organizations shouldn’t care about their budgets. Of course they should. But would you rather work with someone who charges $50 per hour or $300 per hour? Don’t be so certain.

In marketing communications and public relations, it’s not about simply getting the project done. It’s about getting it done right. It’s about garnering results. It’s about achieving a quality return for your investment. Usually, it’s about knowing the right thing at the right time … a value that cannot be measured in minutes or hours.

When someone tells me they cannot afford our services, I often find myself suggesting that they can’t afford not to invest in our services. Why? Because we get the job done right. Why? Because we know what it takes to turn communications efforts into a solid return for our clients. Why? Because we go the extra mile or two or three to do what it takes to delight our clients.

So, don’t simply look for the cost. Look for the value.
