Even though I’ve only been with Neuger Communications Group two years, I’ve been a Northfield resident for nearly three decades. My wife Pam and I moved here from northern California in 1981, arriving on the Sunday of Defeat of Jesse James Days. We involuntarily watched the parade from the cab of our Ryder rental truck while waiting to cross Division Street.
Seems like only yesterday. Well, not really – it’s been 30 years and a lot of water over the Ames Mill dam.
I’ve worked in or around downtown Northfield for most of that period and have seen many changes – businesses coming and going – the Burnsville Center threat; the big box retail threat; the Internet shopping threat. We have not been immune to the market forces that have affected other communities of similar size. But Northfield has been resilient. It seems that someone has always been willing to step into the void with a new concept or an improved product or service that contributes to our vibrant city in a positive way.
Division Street is going to get another change soon, and we’re proud to be part of it. Neuger Communications Group has entered into an agreement to lease/buy the building on the corner of Fourth and Division, the former Community Resource Bank building. If all goes according to plan, we’ll be in our new digs in time for – you guessed it – Defeat of Jesse James Days. I hope the Cole-Younger gang doesn’t attempt to rob the wrong former bank building.
We’re excited about our new Bridge Square address. We believe it’s good for downtown to have a firm like ours, with a dozen full-time employees and the prospect of doubling our staff over the next few years. Without exception, our out-of-town clients love to come to Northfield to eat, shop and enjoy the city. We hope our presence will enhance the activity downtown.
I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about our project and seeing the progress in the coming months. We’re happy to call Northfield our home. It’s a great place to do business and (cue Sinatra) …
This is our kind of town.
Our kind of town, Northfield is,
Our kind of people, too;
People who smile at you …
It’s our kind of town.
